Gustiamo Artists in Residence: The Bronx Graffiti Art Gallery

Art and food. Food as art. Food IS art. That is how we see it: good food is art. All of our farmers and food makers are master artists and their mediums are ingredients, flavors, and traditions.

We love and embrace art, and right here in Gusitamo’s Bronx community there is beautiful art all around us. Everywhere you turn here in The Bronx there are beautiful tags and writings on the walls, a.k.a. graffiti. Although the art of writing on walls dates back to ancient times, and the word “graffiti “is an Italian one, the modern graffiti tradition as we know it today was born in The Bronx. If you don’t know what we mean, we recommend the documentary Style Wars. Actually, one of the young men staring in this 1980s documentary is the legendary artist Skeme, one of our artists in residence at The Bronx Graffiti Art Gallery.

The Bronx Graffiti Art Gallery was started by our graffiti artist friend Kathleena Howie (a.k.a. Lady K Fever) as a mission to preserve Graffiti in SoBro (The South Bronx). Kathleena along with her co-curator Scratch, as well as with the artists: Skeme, Ces, Trike, KingBee, and TATS Cru: BG183, Bio and Nicer transformed Piazza Gustiamo (the courtyard outside our warehouse) into a gorgeous Bronx chic art gallery. We had a wonderful art gallery opening when the artists concluded their work. Grandmaster Caz came with HushTours and we even had a heartfelt discussion about hip-hop, oppression, and privilege. The video below is our mini-documentary of the process, it was inspiring.
